GARMAP is the complete software tool
for managing your Garmin GPS unit.
GARMAP provides accurate geographical data for
all Garmin Map Enabled GPS Systems, which augments the information
already on the basemap. With GARMAP, you can view existing
waypoints, routes and tracks on the graphic map or quickly
create new waypoints or routes. Garmap can also be loaded
to your PC enabling you to quickly select maps and save them
to your GPS unit, or a data card. Editing and managing your
waypoints and routes is made easy with GARMAP.
EXISTING GARMAP PRODUCT RANGE
Garmap SA Streetmaps Version 3:
This product contains street level data - and street addresses
where applicable - for over 1000 South African cities, towns
and rural villages. Also included are over 40 000 selected
points of interest and nearly 300 000km of road data. Bonus
software including: Mapsource V6.5 update; USB/serial drivers;
GPS for beginners; Mapsource user guide and nRoute software
which utilizes your laptop as an auto-routing navigation unit
with almost any Garmin GPS.
Garmap South Africa Topographic and Recreation
version 1.01:
This product contains the South African 1:50 000 Topographic
Data (contours, roads, rivers etc) combined with Cadastral
Data (Farms and Farm portions) as well as our own in-house
data. This is a non-routable data set.
Garmap Africa Road Atlas Version 2:
This product is an autorouting mapset which covers regional
roads and highways in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho,
Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania,
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi
Garmap Fitness Version 1
This product provides the Garmap users with a detailed South
African map base (PC usage only) for up-and downloading of
training sessions, recreational planning and orientation in
a specific area. Included Training Center software helps you
tailor workouts to meet specific goals and objectives. Create
your own workouts or use workout templates included on the
CD. Interactive analysis tools let you chart performance overlaid
on a map.
Garmap Nigeria Streetmaps, Topographic and Recreation Version
1
Network of Nigeria and Lagos streetmaps – also through
routes within other
cities and towns.
Powerful Point of Interest (POI) search capability and Road
Routing
technology allows you to accurately plan your next recreational
trip or
business outing on your PC ( If CD Purchased) or compatible
Garmin GPS Displays information such as lodging, filling stations,
contours (100m),
forests and more. Interactivity between PC and GPS for transfer
of tracks, waypoints and routes Internet registration ensures
newsletters, information
updates and community participation, enabling you to have
a say in developing
additional content for the products.
Specialist Applications:
This product allows Companies or private individuals with
specialist data requirements to have their data overlaid on
any of the existing mapsets.

HISTORY
In the late 1990’s Avnic Trading CC, the Garmin distributors
in South Africa were selling large quantities of product with
the ability to load additional map data. No mapping was available
from Garmin for Africa and this resulted in frustration by
the end users, which in turn began a drive to produce maps
that were developed by South Africans for South Africa.
In 2001 Garmin released a Utility tool which
enabled their distributors to create maps for areas without
coverage. Tsala Technology CC was granted the rights to produce
mapping and in turn secured MapIT as a supplier of digital
map data for South Africa. Together the companies produced
the first mapset in 2003. In 2004, Georigin, a shareholder
in MapIT, was utilized to produce digital vectorised data
sets for other GARMAP products that are available today. At
the beginning of 2005 Garmin products with Auto Routing capabilities
were released, resulting in Garmap being enabled to produce
routable, voice prompted, map sets.
With the ability to modify the mapsets at short
notice, it became possible to produce specialist maps, as
an example a Regional power supplier requested the addition
of their primary power lines which were overlaid on an existing
Garmap product. This capability is available for other specialist
applications.
Tsala Technology CC, Georigin and MapIT continue
to strive to create and maintain accurate mapping solutions
under the GARMAP Brand for Garmin users on the African Continent.
