Hi,

I'm a newbie here and with GPSes. I got a 1410 last week with 2009 SAS
pre-installed. Only to see that the 2010 maps came out over the
weekend.

I only have a Mac, no Windows available.

So the question is, is it possible to convert the p&p license/key on a Mac?
I have searched through the forum and found the cookbook on how to do
it with Mapsource, but no Mac info, and some of it is a little old.

I have registered myself and the 1410 on the Garmap site. I have
downloaded the Mac version of the 2010.1 SAS maps and have installed
RoadTrip and Mapinstall. I can also see the file with the unlock code on
the 1410's filesystem.

But now I'm a little stuck on how to convert the p&p license. Anybody got
any ideas? Even a pretty manual method is also fine. I'm actually a unix /
commandline guy.

John, welcome to the forums.

When you use MapInstall to load the new map to the Nuvi1410 the P&Play license gets converted to a marriage license between the Map and the Nuvi itself. Remember your new license is free as you only purchased the unit recently, and the new map actually replace the old.

You will then have to take the SD card out of the Nuvi before rebooting the Nuvi, otherwise it will tell you it can't unlock the map (the old map that has been re-licensed with the new map installed to the internal memory of your Nuvi in this case - one license per map per unit.)

Later you may reformat the SD card with this program. Until such time the old SD card will be useless.

My advice is to wait a day or two before you take the plunge, watch this space...

John

Welcome to the Forum and the Garmin family. Leon has some good advice for you to follow. The Nuvi 1410 is a wonderful and full featured gps and you will have many happy hours with it.

My suggestion is that you get hold of the 2010 mapset DVD from the agents in Pretoria. There are many in your area. On the DVD (reverse side of DVD ie MAC side) there is a pdf file telling you step by step how to install the Streetmaps in RoadTrip and 1410 which will convert the P&P license to using RoadTrip (BTW much better and more user friendly than Mapsource). If you do not want to buy the DVD (R20) come back here and I'll PM you the pdf file.

You also need the Garmin MapManager for MAC which you will have to download from the Garmin site before you can install the maps in RoadTrip. The file size is 21.25 Mb. It is also a good idea to download the Garmin POI Loader for MAC which you will need later to update the POI's which is updated every two weeks. You get this from the Garmap site.

I suggest you think about converting to the Topo and Rec 2010 mapset. The big screen of the 1410 begs for the Topo maps .

Hi Guys,

I got it working!

Montana, if you download the MAC version of the maps, you get a pdf
document with it that show step by step what to do. The problem was
with step 6:

Step 5: Open the URL on the DVD called Garmap Unlock Site.
Step 6: Follow prompts to get your unlock code.

That sounds so easy, but I got stuck because I did not realize that there
were 3 versions of the DVD, until I read

Shorty's post.

So I had to choose the "data only" option (which is the last option), which
is the closest to a download. I got my unlock code for the 2010.1 SAS
maps and was happy.

Then I got stuck again. I could not get the maps downloaded or the
firmware updated. Both MapInstall and WebUpdater would go through the
motions of doing their job without an error. But every time I would end up
with the same firmware version, in WebUpdater's case or broken maps in
MapInstall's case.

Until one time that I tried again and instead of clicking on the eject button
for the GARMIN Volume, as Mac OSX calls it, I just yanked the USB cable.
And voila! the firmware was updated. I tried the same with MapInstall and
got working maps.

I really do not know what happens when MAC OSX do the eject, but for
now, I will live with MAC OSX complaining that I did not get a chance to
cleanly unmount the volume.

Leon, my maps came on the internal flash, so I do not have a SD card to
format.

That's interesting John and thanks for the feedback.  I think GDA should hear of this so I've sent Tedster a note

Nice to hear that everything is working now.

I sometimes forget to unmount the usb devices by pulling the cable out. Never had a problem with that. I think it's more applicable to external HDDs because it might still be buzy writing data to the drive. Unmounting the HDD with the eject button will ensure that the writing process completes without interuption.

I make use of a small programme called USB Safely Remove and it's cured the odd hassle I had with devices not being recognised when connecting.  The standard Win Safely Remove works OK - it was mainly in actually loading the device.

Can't recall what it cost but it wasn't expensive otherwise I would have remembered that

With Mac this isn't a real problem since OSX flushes buffers rather
quickly, it's more a problem if you have a program that is actively writing
to it when you pull the drive out. Windows registers the drive as active
and doesn't unregister it until you either shutdown or properly unmount
the drive.

With regards to the flash drive, Windows does not register this the same
way it does a HDD attached to the flash port. If you pull the FD out there
is no problem, if you disconnect a HDD then it is not usable in another
computer until you change the registry on the HDD to say it is not longer
in use by the original computer.

Hope this helps.
